I used to be all in favor of Apple using USB-C back when it promised to be the simple port you could use for everything with just one cable. Now USB-C is just too fucking confusing. I hope they continue to use Lightning/wireless until the USB-IF improves the way it names, labels, and verifies their products.

Nobody with a regular working brian has ever struggled to plug something in the right way. It was just the stupidly massive variety of different plugs available that kept us raging. If there never was a need for phones becoming thinner than before, we all could have gone USB-B like on external HDDs, printers and such (like all the years before)... 3:50 oh hell yeah -i do! Because my crappy Sony phone comes with USB 3 which transfers stuff faster than pulling files into any cloud over home wifi and downloading all the shit back on my PC. I mean yeah you could also remove the microSD, put it into the adapter and then slot it in a reader but who does this LOL... So basicly anyone who has big files on the phone will actually use the cable for data transfer. Just like true Gamers use Cat6 + cables and now wireless crap.

Just another example of a narrow minded central government looking for a problem when there is none. If you don't like Apple's business practice, don't buy their product. If enough people do that, they will change their ports to what the people want. This law will hinder innovation as the next port advancement might be put on hold as the law would restrict it's use. Government is never the solution.

Apple makes product decisions based on hours and hours of meetings and strategizing.. To think they lost a connector/ cable battle is stupid. They are the only company that ever reaped that much licensing money from their 30 pin and 8 pin to begin with. Even if they phase out the 8 pin, they knew that a higher bandwidth USB is going to eventually make them run out of excuses to not provide their customers with the best experience. To say that they “lost” doesn’t mean anything since no other computer manufacturer has even played in the same licensing game at all (with some exceptions that arent’ even worth mentioning)

Ild be more concerned for certain categories of cheap generic phones/etc which are typically just rebranded old stock with a usb-mini-b port or so. and having all that get scraped instead of used.

3 dagen geleden

Lightning was innovative - it was better than Micro and Mini USB (the only other options available at 2012). USB C was innovative too, better than lightning. It IS technically possible for this law to stifle innovation - say for example, if a newer standard is invented which is better than USB C - under this law, manufacturers would not be able to take advantage of that new standard until the law was revised. For example - if USB D is invented, manufacturers won't be allowed to implement it it unless this law is updated. It's very fun to puff your cheeks out and laugh as Apple is forced to standardise - but bear in mind this realistically will not take effect for another 3 years at least, which is plenty of time for a theoretical USB D to be invented. I think there is benefit in forcing Apple to standardise (lets be real, the upgrade to lightning probably be proprietary) but legislation which is slow to change (and will have to change on firstly an EU basis, then a per-country basis) is not the correct solution to this issue and can very easily cause further problems down the line.

Actually my androd work phone and personal iPhone have their chargers new in the box as I need longer cable for night charge and I use old ones as a travel cable.

The rest of the world will follow, if they want to or not. The banning of lead in soldered joints came from the EU, manufacturers adopted it for all products. Same will be for USB-C. Or does anyone think, that companies will produce two different versions of their products, if there's no actual need for it? And let's be honest: there's no real need for different charge plugs, no real advantages of one connector over another, at least at a consumer level.

Apple could always bring out wall chargers with a special chip, that only works with the iPhone via USB-C. Charger could detect the chip then send an encrypted signal to the phone which only Apple can decode....... then charge $$$ for the wall charger, as only lubed up Apple users would pay...... I’m a fan of having more standardization. I have at least 7 different USB connectors in my home: mini, micro, A, C, the upstream printer one, a proprietary one for an audio interface, and whatever that weird external hard drive one is. It’s the worst. However, the cables that I actually throw away (at least, over the short term) get thrown out because the cable failed/frayed/stopped charging or connecting. If we (the world) are serious about cutting down on e-waste, wouldn’t it make sense to legislate more durable cables, as well?

Hello you got it all wrong, it was apple which innovated USB C where they didn’t take any credit for as they wanted standardised the whole industry including stubborn one that hate innovating. It was apple master plan where the whole industry adopted it silently. Then lighting port is smaller, compact and gives more room for new technological innovation, now there are a lot of fast charging lighting cable that have USC-C connector for the charging adaptors with a lighting port like Anker, Apple itself so Apple has already won. With the passing of time lighting port will be replace with MagSafe charging port like the one in new MacBook Pro 2021 M1X series that will be revealed by Oct 18 2021 By the by later on - over the air charging will be rolling out, so usb C as as connector to iPhone will never ever come as per your whims n fancy. Check real-time fact timeline with the reasoning n in-depth logical analysts instead of posting ur biased n one sided anti-apple n anti-innovation fantasies with anti-tactics like u will no see, won’t see n will never see

I don‘t say that bc explicitly lightning is something i need to keep but it‘s overruling same thing as article 13 (or whatever it is now called) once it gets put threw by companies.

What usb-c has already done is pretty un-ecological: you can't use your old usb-a chargers to quick charge your new usb-c devices like ipads. For that you need to replace ALL your existing (20+ in my posession, some installed permanently or integrated in extension cords) chargers to comply with some new PD spec. And still Lidl & Ikea are selling those usb-a ports in their products that are already in the pipeline for obsolescence. EU should have banned these or should have made recent PD versions mandatory long time ago. Or ban devices for wanting that spec to charge fast. For example: you can't use old ipad's usb-a-charger to charge new ipad air or pro. Or you can, but it will take 3x longer thn it used to with old ipad.

I honestly don't see what Apple's problem is. The MacBooks and the iPads have USB-C/Thunderbolt ports already. Just bring that over to the iPhone and everyone will be happy! We look at the Lightning port now the way we looked at the 30-Pin connector back in 2011. Sure coming out with an iPhone with USB-C next year would be a little inconvenient but there are a plethora of USB-C cables and charging bricks. Even for data, Lightning cables still use the now slow as molasses USB 2.0 spec. USB-C is way faster for charging and data.

9 dagen geleden
flameshana9
flameshana9

Assuming I understand your question the port defines the speed, not the cable. So for example my 3ds says 4.6v/900mA on it, so that's pretty low by today's standards. A generic 5v wall charger uses around 5-10 watts total. Usb C can go up to 100 watts apparently. And while the cables need to be short to supply that much, it's the port itself that's the issue. If the port can charge at 60 watts then you can charge a laptop battery with it or a phone rather quickly compared to the usual 5-10 watts.
