Why does Windows assign "C" to your system drive instead of "A" or another letter?

Ahhh, good old floppys. A 3 inch fall setting it down on your desk too hard, one spec of dust, one slight hiccup during a transfer, and it brought Windows to its knees, corrupted beyond repair before you knew it. Imagine spending an hour inserting multiple floppy’s to install ONE PROGRAM, and it ends up tanking your operating system a couple reboots later. Good old days.

I actually have a usb flash drive that I wanted to always have assigned the same letter in Windows. I specifically set the drive letter to A so that unless I for some reason plugged in (if I could find one) a floppy drive AND that flash drive Windows would remember the flash drive and assign it to A.

C is for "computer" that's the home where you and your OS live. D is for Disk drive, AKA your optical drive. E is for Extra which is another optical drive or maybe a hot swap sata bay. F is for Flash storage, your mobile thumb drive hotrod of choice. G is for Garage, it's where you throw all your junk that you don't want in the house... except for the car of course, there's never enough room in the garage for the car. That has to stay outside to get pummeled by rain, hail, and bird crap.

I got an old ms dos based pocket computer - an HP-95LX. It stores everything on its whopping 1MB of ram but does have an option for storage expansion. After loading MS DOS 3.22 it boots from ram labeling as C: but any expansion card is given A:. Its a weird device. Basically part of the ram (starting at address 0x0 iirc which can lead to problems) is used as disk and the rest is used as normal ram. It even allows the user to specify how much ram vs disk they want, sacrificing ram for disk space or vice versa. One issue that can occur is that some programs are made to run at address 0x0 and nowhere else. Nothing catches this issue. You can accidentally wipe your drive running the wrong program

Huh. Everyone's talking about floppies. I started with punched paper tape and Creed teletypes, and yes, I am very old. Ancient even. You have a very old video on HDR. But now HDR is so much more complex (or has been) with different certifications from the monitor side, making HDR less about "High dynamic range". Me as a colorist, feel the djungel of different standards in manufacturing, varies hugely on both software and hardware applications to portray HDR. Cheap monitor or a very expensive reference monitor can have same classification, still very different.

I know it's techquickie not techlongie but it would have been worth noting that conflating disks and mount points is a Windows/DOS "feature". On other operating systems (e.g. *nix based ones) the mount point can be chosen independently of the device. So you can mount /dev/sda at any location you like. Incidentally, Linux and BSD give block devices letters starting from A regardless of the drive type, unless it's NVME in which case they get a number for some reason.

This question is not that connected to the topic of the video but I hope someone can help me. I got two m.2 NVMe SSD that are absolutely the same components The question is, does it matter ( performance wise ) if I install my games on the drive that I got my Windows on, or I can install them on the other drive since they are the same components without losing any performance in games ( would there be any difference )? In advance thankful!

I didn't grow up in the days of the Commodores/DOS, when you had to learn how a computer worked to use it. And I feel like I've been missing out. It's just much more fun to explore these old machines, and my experience is in emulators, so I have only experienced half the magic. Sure, on paper, it seems like PCs becoming more and more user friendly is good because there is not much of a learning curve anymore, but it creates idiots who have no idea how anything works and assume stuff that just flat out doesn't make sense. No, opening a website/downloading a file/opening a ZIP does not automatically infect your PC. There is no way malicious code could have been run, unless there is some sort of exploit which likely has been fixed in the browser/archiver already. Nowadays, there is flat out no way to explore your modern PC. On Windows, that is. At least Linux is there to provide you with the opportunity. This is why Linux is an objectively better "Personal Computer" platform - because it's not the operating system controlling you, it's *you controlling it.* It does what you tell it to do, no questions asked.
