Passwords are great, because you don't need your phone or some other piece of garbage on you all the time. So many times something wants to send my phone a verification code and its not on my desk, so I have to get up and find it. Also 2FA-only would really suck for Boomers/Silent gen who just don't understand smart phones (Eg my elderly grandma).

I'm one of those mofos with a 50 characters password XD,its made up of my name, surname, nickname(that i use in games and such but irl a bit aswel) AND my birth date, now i know i gave you all the details to break my password but think again XD.I split my all of those things in bits and missmatched them, for exemple my nickname is Shadow, that alone is split in 3 parts, not to mention my name and surname which are pretty long even in my country XD,they add up together(plus random stuff i add sometimes) to anywhere between 30-50 characters, each passowrd i have for Epic or Steam and such even Google every single one is unique and different, but yeah i do need a notepad doc OR an actual piece of paper with them in order to remember them, still those long ass passwords plus the two fac authentification usually means i'm safe as hell XD,i don't want nor think fingerprints or face and eye recognition should be a thing, idk i just don't like it much, for exemple i'd hate for my own house to look at me and confirm i am myself in order to open the door,if i have the key then the key is good enough,it worked for thousends of years it should still work now too XD Plus what would stop a thief from stealing my phone or something, hold it in the front of my face to unlock it take full control over it and run? NOTHING but if i have a long ass password that only i know they can suck bananas cuz they will still not get into my phone, overall a "key" to open something i own that sits inside my mind and only i can access it is safer than a "key" that exists in this world and has a physical form like my face or fingerprint which can usualy be easy to get specially if you're knocked unconscious for exemple,i will stick with my long ass passwords thank you very much =)))))

I don't trust password managers that much because, y'know, you're giving away all of your passwords to a company, and you have no idea if they'll ever use them for something that isn't giving you access to your own accounts. I do recommend people, at least on accounts they don't use that often, to use the "Forgot your password?" method every time you want to log in. That way, you have 2FA even if the service doesn't support it (since you get an email to change your password) and you don't have to memorize any passwords (you can literally put random characters when you change your password since you're gonna change it again next time you log in)!

Frankly I don't care about having a strong password on anything that doesn't really matter.. my phone, my pc, are all auto boot without a password.. my recovery email, my bank, and Amazon all have really strong passwords tho and the rest I could care less about...

Its not crazy when you simply it. For example ! = l , $ = s , & = B ( or a cursive G or S) , + = t , @ = a. See what Im getting at? Just make the special characters act as letters and replace one or two real letters with them to make a password.

The problem with "federated passwords" comes down to the fact that you might want to give someone else, other than yourself, access to ONE account in the federation, but not let them have access to everything. Using your Google account for instance is great if it's always, 100% just you, but it breaks down if you want to give a coworker, friend, or family member access to some random, free photo editing service that uses your Google account but very much don't want them to have access to your email, calendar, and YouTube, etc.

Let's get rid of a potentially insecure method of authenticating, and replace it with a worse method of emailing you the one time use key... Improved password requirements (and/or a Password Manager) plus a 2FA is the best possible solution at this time. I'm truly surprised we don't see muggers with a pair of garden shears.

I'll stick with passwords. especially considering what microsoft has done. just makes things more complicated and time consuming. adds extra steps that are unneccessary... I turn my pc /laptop on tap the fingerprint reader and boom i'm in.. the idea of having to unlock my phone and authenticate everytime i want to get into windows or unlock my pcafter being idle. just too time consuming considering it takes less than a second to just tap the fingerprint reader. and then all my other passwords are done via passsword manager which again is just another tap on the finger print reader to unlock.

13 dagen geleden

@David Frischknecht if the information is correct. No it wouldn't. As it requires an Internet connection to use. Not much use if I'm using my laptop on the go and there's no Internet until after I've logged in to windows and connected to a WiFi hotspot.. Part of the reason so many people still use local accounts for windows sign ins on there devices instead of online ones.

Ah yes, a phone app and a microsoft account to be able to log in to MY device.... no thanks. Their servers go down? forget about logging in. Bad reception/ no internet? Forget about logging in. MS bans or suspends your account (they can do it for whatever reason)? forget about.... 2-factor authentication to stuff that isn't your PC/ phone? (idk, bank accout), yeah sure, why not. And if there is a "backup" regular password.... well, then it suffers from all current flaws of the regular password. In places where you REALLY need security there's physical security (need walk next to a guard and show id etc.) or military laptops that run on custom os and everything is encrypted, login password is only small part of their security...

I dislike 2 factor authentication and bio-metrics personally. Mainly for the reason I don't want to give personally identifiable info to most companies. Hell... I still have some older email accounts that I have avoided giving them my phone number on. Because why should they have that when they can just send recovery emails to another separate email account. An account that is also not able to be traced back to my real world self. But... it does mean I have to be more careful then most people with passwords and use unique, long, and complex passwords for anything I would hate to lose.

How about we just remove the letters all together and just hide it behind faceID or toughID. Unless they literally come up to you and chop off your finger... idk. How about a rant on the thickness of phones? If they make them 15% thicker, they can put in a battery at least 15% bigger and get 15% more time out of it! Really, what's the obsession with thinness? I've never heard anyone say, "This phone is too thick!" But I have heard, "Why can't I get through a day without having to charge my phone twice?" Then there are the battery-saving tips, which are basically two things: (1) Dim the display, and (2) Turn off all the cool features we told you about in our ads. Sheesh. Oh, I just found number (3), Use Wi-Fi. Right. Who needs security and privacy? And then there's the add-ons: add-on batteries, portable charges and whatnot. Oh, number (4), Update to the latest version of the OS. Sure, update to all the new bugs and dropped, cool features.

Generally, a scam works to someones benefit. I wouldn't rely on the fact that you haven't been hit as proof that you never will be. Often it's because black hats simply dont have the time to go through every single compromised account in their collection and so they have to prioritize accounts that might have something valuable that they can leverage.

Double blind passwords using a password manager for the win. Your password manager only contains a part of your passwords, the final say 4+ digits are the digits only you know and remember which are used to complete the password and log into the service you are using.

As to the CyberNews "tool" that reports that 2 of my Microsoft hotmail email accounts are in the hacked list, and others aren't: why didn't Microsoft email me? WHY??? They have the same access that I do (and better) and it would have cost them about nine dollars to email EVERY account on the planet that is on the breached list and has a hotmail address. WTMF???
