RAM timings were very important back in the Socket A (462) days when aiming for decent SuperPI times for 1MB calculation and also to gain more FPS when memory bandwidth was the bottleneck. When I had an Abit NF7-S 2.0 mobo with an XP2100+ T'bred B @ 2350MHz or so and 2 x 512MB PC3500 (Geil One W) which had Winbond BH-5 chips and ran stable with timings of CL1.5-2-2-5 at over 200MHz (lowered the CPU multi) and when I tested the same memory on a DFI Lanparty skt939 mobo it clocked up to 285MHz CL2-2-2-5 and when I tried CL1.5-2-2-5 it would almost clock to the same frequency as before but 280MHz was the maximum clock stable with the CL1.5 timings. There was always a "debate" when it came to what the last number in DDR 1 timings which I used to set to '5' but I think some people thought '11' was better - never tested this however. The timings made a massive difference when it came to SuperPI, Futuremark benchmarks as well as SiSoft memory bandwidth benchmarks as well. Another thing that made a huge difference back in the early to mid 2000's was the "command rate" as by default (SPD timings) this would be set to 2t whilst setting 1t in the BIOS could be done, it made even more of a difference and again benchmarks were proving that these settings made a difference. The BH-5 memory I had did need me to set the vDimm to 3.6v to do the speeds I stated and I had 4 x 80mm delta screamers in a Juno P6 plastic full tower case! I bet someone in their mid to late 30's perhaps remembers the "striking" Juno P6 case!!! you either love them or you hate them and this was the same 'case' as it was back when the case was use by computer enthusiasts to modify and install custom water cooling setups within or just have a full tower case just in case you ever require 5 or 6 optical drives and 4 HDD's etc lol

I usually just look at memory and SSD capacity. Anything else just yield marginal performance gains.

TBH, just having an SSD at all is fine for most. The max speed is for sequential, but the random access is fast enough that most won't notice. A hard drive is around 100 IOPS. A SATA SSD around 90,000 IOPS. An NVMe perhaps 500,000 IOPs. Most won't notice difference between 900 times faster, and 5,000 times faster. Some will benefit, but really if I were buying a laptop, and it said SSD, would be good enough for me. Before I upgraded to Ryzen 1700X, my boot time was bottlenecked by my CPU, not my SATA SSD. For desktop, I would prefer NVMe for build simplicity, and free extra speed. Besides having an SSD, my most important spec is having a 1080p screen. For WAY too long, 99% of sub $1000 laptops came with "HD" 720p screens. If you were to custom order one, it wasn't even an option to get 1080p for an extra cost. Back in the mid 2000s, you could get a 1680x1050 laptop for under $1000, then for some reason virtually all manufactures decided to say screw it, let's save $3 and make everyone get a screen with lower resolution than their cell phone or TV. Luckily things have improved.

Prebuilt manufacturers will advertise amazing specs on a box but list nothing about the board in it. In my case, last year, I bought an ROG G15CS with a 9700f and 2070 super. Nice case, nice sized memory and storage, only to find that the motherboard is so horrible and underpowered that the components overwhelm it. It hangs up when changing between programs etc. Awful. So misleading.

Hear me out here: Display quality on TVs. I'm not saying it's not important, but that manufacturers (,and stores) keep repeating these specs in lew of saying other specs like how many HDMI ports there are or how user friendly the operating system/UI actually is. I may be in the minority here, but as long as a human looks like a human rather than just a square, the picture quality is good enough for me. I want to know how many things I can hook up to my tv at any given time.

It pains me knowing so many people don't know Megabit from Megabyte. Also you'll find many people complaining on pretty much every drive about space. Although 1GB = 1024MB, you're not getting 1,024,000MB because for whatever reason 1000MB can be 'technically' called a GB. Not all manufacturers do this, but alot do.

About the ghz. Yes, it is not the whole truth just to look at whichever had the highest number. But generally it is a good thing to look at for the average consumer. Non-tech-savvy ppl wont have the time, nor the interest to look up reviews of every laptop. Most of the time a higher clock will result in better performance; albeit not the best performance. But non techy persons seldom care about the best anyways.

Some specs may not matter that much, especially if the OS can bottleneck certain components like the CPU and even data speeds. It's kinda how even though iPhones have lower specs than their Android counterparts, iPhones constantly outperform Android phones with greater specs.

Another one that doesn't work out properly in actual usage, I've got a 45W intel i5 Skylake laptop. It will drop down to ~2W in light usage situations, the same as the 15W laptop CPUs, only my 45W laptop has a *much* larger battery, so before the battery got old and lost some of it's capacity I regularly saw 8+ hours battery life out of a 5 lbs, mid range gaming laptop when using it for light work. The 15W laptops have much smaller batteries, their power draw is lower at peak but virtually identical at light usage.

POWER SUPPLIES! We seriously need a better way to rate power supplies than just 80+ We should have other rating such as circuit protection quality and power ratings at each rail clearly listed rather than a whole PSU wattage rating. We need better industry standards across the board that hold PSU manufacturs to certain standards.

Something that make me crazy is when you go to a computer shop and ask a seller for a computer and tells u garbage just to make you buy the computer, and they don't talk about some specs that can be important like memory speed or latency, they just tell big numbers on spec that ppl knows and they buy it.... But.... here is an example, imagine I want to buy a computer for class to take my lessons on... They will talk about the battery, ram, processor, tell its fast... But the computer have an 5200rpm drive... And he just tells me it's a 1tb drive.. no matter the ram quantity or the processor's power, I'll get garbage performances cause of the 5200rpm drive

well it's not much of a thing now anymore but back in the day there was this notorious "bigger equals better" advertisings and there were those idiotic shit performance gpus that had large vrams and then you checked and it was gddr3 when gddr5 was a thing already. ofc the gddr3 vram was to slow and the gpus to weak to even utilize a 4 gb vram properly and by far outperformed by reasonable gpus that even had a 256 mb gddr5 vram. basically it was a scam soley targeting uninformed buyers that have no clue about tech and hardware. really it would be like running a core 2 duo with 512 gb of ram. totally idiotic since the cpu is far to weak and slow to even utilize it in any way. but bigger number must be better so people fall for it.
